Joseph A. Main Scholarship

In conjunction with the United Mine Workers of America and California University of Pennsylvania, on May 13th, 1996, AFGE Local 1916 established the Joseph A. Main AFGE/UMWA Scholarship at California University of Pennsylvania. The purpose of this AFGE Local 1916 union scholarship is to financially assist an undergraduate student attending California University of Pennsylvania who is a current member or employee or the child of a current member or employee of either AFGE or the UMWA.

AFGE Local 1916 established this scholarship with a contribution that was matched by the UMWA and California University of Pennsylvania. Once the fund reached a principle balance of $10,000, the scholarship would be financially sufficient to permit students to begin receiving financial assistance from the earnings on the endowment. In 1998, the fund reached the $10,000 level, and the first scholarship was awarded in the amount of $275.

AFGE Local 1916 continues to budget for a contribution to the fund and continues to solicit the UMWA for matching contributions to the fund. At the present time, the fund supports an annual scholarship of $1,028.

Applicants must apply for the scholarship by March 31 each year, with the scholarship covering the ensuing fall and spring semesters. Additional information regarding this and other scholarships at the California University of Pennsylvania is available on the university's Financial Aid web site.
